Global NOAA CoastWatch Chlorophyll Frontal Product from MODIS/Aqua from 2015-08-01 to 2022-10-31 (NCEI Accession 0110333)

browse graphicPreview graphic
This collection includes MODIS/Aqua chlorophyll frontal data products. The NOAA Okeanos operational production system produces near real-time chlorophyll frontal products (magnitude and direction), using data from MODIS/Aqua L2 chlorophyll products that are generated in the Okeanos system using the NASA L2gen ocean color algorithm. The chlorophyll frontal products are calculated using the BOASNRA algorithm, a concatenation of the Belkin-O'Reilly Algorithm (BOA) for front detection (Belkin and O'Reilly, 2009), and the Stripe Noise Reduction Algorithm (SNRA) (Belkin et al, 2013). The BOASNRA code is included in the CoastWatch ocean color products processing software that was written by the NOAA CoastWatch team. Maps of oceanic chlorophyll fronts can be directly used in marine fisheries, marine conservation, environment protection, and other applications and operations.

Navigate directly to the URL for data access and direct download.
  • FTP (download)
These data are available through the File Transfer Protocol (FTP). FTP is no longer supported by most internet browsers. You may copy and paste the FTP link to the data into an FTP client (e.g., FileZilla or WinSCP).
Order Data
  • Order (order)
These data are available through NOAA's Comprehensive Large Array-data Stewardship System (CLASS). Use the CLASS web interface to search for and order data by temporal, spatial and and other product-specific criteria. You may also create a subscription to order data on a regular basis.
Distribution Formats
  • PNG (Version: 1.2)
  • HDF (Version: 2013)
    • File Specification: NOAA CoastWatch HDF. CW HDF file will have satellite fields with the following information: Lat, Lon, Frontal magnitude, Frontal direction, Flags (rejected pixels). File-naming convention = DataSource_PYYYYJJJ_hhmm_XXZZ_closest_DataProduct.nc, where: - DataSource: MODSCW - DataProduct: chlgradmag, which indicates that processing was used to calculate the gradient of the OC Chlorophyll data. - YYYYJJJ: Starting and ending 4-digit year and 3-digit day of year for 8-day composite - hhmm: four digit starting time (hour + minutes) of granule - XX: Region information: GM for Gulf of Mexico, AK for Alaska, CB for Caribbean, NE for Northeast US, SE for Southeast US, and WC for West coast US. - ZZ: Projection option, 05 is projection of Mercator. - closest: Designates a particular non-default way of performing geoprojection

Purpose An analysis of horizontal gradients in satellite ocean color data from the MODIS/Aqua data stream provides information on frontal boundaries important to marine ecosystems. This information can be used by marine scientists to better manage marine resources. For example, the interannual variability in the strength and location of ocean fronts affects a number of key living marine resources, such as Northern Shrimp, Atlantic herring and marine mammals.
