Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) Atlas: East Florida, maps in portable document format, Volume 1, Volume 2 (NCEI Accession 0004150)

browse graphicGraphic not available.
This dataset comprises the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) maps in Portable Document Format (.PDF) for the shoreline of East Florida (to encompass the coastal areas from the Florida/Georgia border to Boca Raton, Florida). ESI data characterize coastal environments and wildlife by their sensitivity to spilled oil. The ESI data include information for three main components: shoreline habitats; sensitive biological resources; and human-use resources. This Atlas was compiled from geographical and biological data collected from 1950-1990s; the intertidal habitats were mapped during aerial and ground surveys conducted in May, 1993, and biological and human-use resources data were compiled by regional biologists in 1995. The dates for the original data vary and are completely documented in within the included FGDC metadata file "METADATA.PDF" and document "INTRO.PDF".

An associated data set, Environmental Sensitivity Index Atlas (ESI) Florida 1995-1997 Digital Data Re-Release is available as NCEI accession 0014187.

Information from left of discs - April 1996, Seattle, Washington

These data were originally submitted to NCEI as a set of 2-CD-ROMs; the second CD contains maps in high-resolution format for output. These data are have are extensively documented with included detailed metadata, a user guide, a map legend file, and separate subdirectories for low and high (300 dpi) environmental sensitivity maps. These files require Adobe Acrobat reader or compatible software for viewing.

An associated data set, Environmental Sensitivity Index Atlas (ESI) Florida 1995-1997 Digital Data Re-Release is available as NCEI accession 0014187. Other ESI atlases are also archived at NCEI.

The original disks for this NCEI accession have been transferred to the NOAA Central Library. A copy of each disk can be generated using the .iso files in the data/0-data/disc_image/ directory.
Purpose The ESI data were collected, mapped, and digitized to provide environmental data for oil spill planning and response. The Clean Water Act, with amendments by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, requires response plans for immediate and effective protection of sensitive resources. Oil spill planning and response remains the primary use of these maps; however, they are finding ever-widening use in such areas as coastal resource inventories and assessments, coastal planning, and recreational planning.
