OSTM/Jason-2 Telemetry Data, 2008 to 2019 (NCEI Accession 0044986)

browse graphicPreview graphic
This collection contains the Ocean Surface Topography Mission (OSTM)/Jason-2 Telemetry data. The dataset consists of raw Level-0 telemetry data from the OSTM/Jason-2 spacecraft. There are three datatypes available: Housekeeping Telemetry - Recorded (HKTM-R) is stored on the spacecraft for later downlink; Payload Telemetry 1 (PLTM-1) is the payload science data from the core-mission payloads: Poseidon-3, DORIS, AMR, and GPSP; and Payload Telemetry 2 (PLTM-2) is the payload science data from the passenger mission of opportunity payloads: CARMEN-2, L2T2 and LPT. They are available as CCSDS packet files. All telemetry data are restricted to the project team, per the mission's 4-partner Memorandum of Understanding.

Other data/products associated with OSTM/Jason-2 are also available, including Level-2 Geophysical Data Records (GDR), ancillary and auxiliary data files used to generate Level-2 products, quality reports from the near real-time altimetry validation system (NRTAVS) and orbit information of OSTM/Jason-2 satellite.

Supplemental Information
OSTM/Jason-2 was a follow-on mission to the TOPEX/Poseidon and JASON-1 missions. OSTM/Jason-2 involves Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES), NASA and 2 new partners: the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) and NOAA in order to 1) ensure continuity of high quality measurements for ocean science, and 2) provide operational products for assimilation and forecasting applications. OSTM/Jason-2 was launched on 20 June 2008 and reached its nominal repetitive orbit on 4 July 2008. The start of cycle 1 occurred on 12 July 2008. After more than 11 years in orbit and well beyond its three- to five-year mission baseline, the Ocean Surface Topography Mission (OSTM) on Jason-2 permanently ceased acquisition of scientific data at 06:48 UTC on 1 October 2019 due to aging-related issues onboard the spacecraft.
Purpose High-precision ocean altimetry measures the distance between a satellite and the ocean surface to within a few centimeters. Accurate observations of variations in sea surface height (ocean topography) provide scientists with information about the speed and direction of ocean currents and heat stored in the ocean. This information, in turn, reveals global climate variations. These telemetry data are further processed through Levels 1 and 2 in order to develop ocean analyses products.
Use Limitations
  • accessLevel: Public
  • Distribution liability: NOAA and NCEI make no warranty, expressed or implied, regarding these data, nor does the fact of distribution constitute such a warranty. NOAA and NCEI cannot assume liability for any damages caused by any errors or omissions in these data. If appropriate, NCEI can only certify that the data it distributes are an authentic copy of the records that were accepted for inclusion in the NCEI archives.
  • All telemetry data (J2-TEL) are restricted to the project team, per the mission's 4-partner Memorandum of Understanding. For these restricted data families, users will only see listed those datatypes upon which they can search.

Acknowledgments
  • OSTM/Jason-2 is a collaboration between NASA; the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA); CNES; and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). CNES is providing the spacecraft, NASA and CNES are jointly providing the payload instruments and NASA's Launch Services Program at the Kennedy Space Center is responsible for Delta II launch management and countdown operations. After completing the on-orbit commissioning of the spacecraft, CNES will hand over its operation and control to NOAA. NOAA and EUMETSAT will generate the near-real-time products and distribute them to users. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., manages the mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington.
