This dataset includes chemical and physical time series data collected from the full water column at Ocean Weather Station M (OWSM) at 66° N, 2° E in the Norwegian Sea between 2001-10-31 and 2021-07-30. The data include Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (TCARBN), Total Alkalinity (ALKALI), water temperature (CTDTMP), and salinity (CTDSAL). Between 2001 and 2007, the dataset also includes Dissolved Oxygen (OXYGEN), nitrate (NITRATE), phosphate (PHSPHT), and silicate (SILICAT). Samples for TCARBN, ALKALI, OXYGEN, and nutrients were collected using Niskin bottles. Water temperature and salinity were monitored using a SeaBird MicroCAT CTD, which regularly was calibrated towards bottle salinity. The ALKALI samples were analysed using a VINDTA 3S instrument with accuracy ±2 µmol kg-1. The TCARBN samples were analysed using a SOMMA instrument between 2001 and 2003 and a VINDTA 3D from 2003 and onwards, both with coulometric titration and an accuracy of ±2 µmol kg-1. The accuracy was determined by using Certified Reference Material provided by prof. Andrew Dickson, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, USA.

The data was collected by Ingunn Skjelvan (NORCE). During 2001 to 2007, Francisco Rey [Institute of Marine Research (IMR), Norway] and Svein Østerhus (NORCE) collected nutrients and hydrography data, respectively. NORCE and IMR are partner institutions of the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, Bergen, Norway.

From 2001 to 2009, data was collected monthly using the weather ship Polarfront. From 2010 and onward, data was collected 4-6 times each year using different research vessels.
This activity has received funding from the University of Bergen, NORCE, Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, Research Council of Norway, Norwegian Environment Agency, and EUs FP7 program. OWSM, which is also called Station M, is part of the GOA-ON network and data is delivered to UNs SDG14.3.1.

Additional datasets from OWSM:
