The instruments used to collect these data include CTD and bottle.
These data were collected by Richard A. Feely and John L. Bullister of US DOC; NOAA; OAR; Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory as part of the WOCE_P18 data set. CDIAC associated the following cruise ID(s) with this data set: WOCE_P18
The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) was a major component of the World Climate Research Program with the overall goal of better understanding the ocean's role in climate and climatic changes resulting from both natural and anthropogenic causes. The CO2 survey took advantage of the sampling opportunities provided by the WOCE Hydrographic Program (WHP) cruises during this period between 1990 and 1998. The final collection covers approximately 23,000 stations from 94 WOCE cruises.

- Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon; Abbreviation: DIC; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Calculated; Replicate information: Replicate measurements from different PVC bottles tripped at the same depth, along with replicate measurements from the same PVC bottle, and the precision for all samples was within +/-1.2 μmol/kg DIC. In addition, sample pairs were collected for shore-based analyses and compared against at-sea results; the shore-based work was done at SIO's shore laboratory using a vacuum extraction/manometric analysis method (Guenther, 1994).; CRM batch number: 19.
- Parameter or Variable: Total alkalinity; Abbreviation: TA; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Type of titration: Metrohm 665 Dosimat(tm) titrator and an Orion(tm) 720A pH meter; Cell type (open or closed): Closed; Uncertainty: The volume of HCl delivered to the cell is traditionally assumed to have a small uncertainty (Dickson, 1981) and is equated with the digital output of the titrator. Calibrations of the Dosimat(tm) burettes with Milli Q(tm) water at 25C indicated that the systems deliver 3.000 mL (the value for a titration of seawater) to a precision of 0.0004 mL. This uncertainty resulted in an error of 0.4 μmol/kg in TAlk. The accuracy of the volume of acid delivered by the Dosimats(tm) was as much as ten times greater (4.0 μmol/kg).; Method reference: Dickson, A.G. (1981): An exact definition of total alkalinity and a procedure for the estimation of alkalinity and total CO2 from titration data. Deep-Sea Res., 28, 609-623. Marinenko, G., and J.K. Bur. Stds., 69A, 153-159..
- Parameter or Variable: pH; Abbreviation: pH; pH scale: total hydrogen ion concentration ([H+]t) scale; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Temperature of pH measurement: 25C; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: Seawater pH was measured using a double-wavelength spectrophotometric procedure (Byrne, 1987) and the indicator calibration of Clayton and Byrne (1993). The indicator was a 8.0-mM solution of Kodak(tm) m-cresol purple sodium salt (C21H17O5Na) in a 10% ethanol solution; the absorbance ratio of the concentrated indicator solution (RI = 578A/434A) was 1.00. All absorbance ratio measurements were obtained in the thermostatted (25.0 +/- 0.05C) cell compartments of Varian(tm) CARY 1 and CARY 3 UV-visible dual-beam spectrophotometers. Periodically the spectrophotometric cells were cleaned with a 1 N HCl solution to preclude biological growth. Measurements of pH were taken at 25.0C..
- Parameter or Variable: pCO2 (fCO2) discrete; Abbreviation: fCO2; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Seawater volume: 500 mL; Headspace volume: 60 mL; Temperature of measurement: 20C; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: The discrete fCO2 system used a LI-COR(tm) (Model 6262) non-dispersive infrared analyzer system and is patterned after the setup described in Chipman et al. (1993) and is discussed in detail in Wanninkhof and Thoning (1993) and Chen et al. (1995).; Sample replicate information: The relative error for replicate analyses for fCO2 was 0.2%.; Method reference: Chipman, D.W., J. Marra, and T.
