This dataset includes chemical, discrete sample, physical and profile data collected from HESPERIDES in the North Atlantic Ocean from 1992-06-14 to 1992-08-15 and retrieved during cruise 29HE06_1-3. These data include ALKALINITY, CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-11 (CFC-11), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-12 (CFC-12), DELTA CARBON-14, DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON, DISSOLVED OXYGEN, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, NITRATE, NITRITE, PHOSPHATE, Potential temperature (theta), SALINITY, SILICATE, WATER TEMPERATURE and pH. The instruments used to collect these data include CTD and bottle. These data were collected by Elisa F. Guallart of Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas, Aida F. Ríos and Fiz Pérez of Instituto de Investigaciones Marinas de Vigo, Frank J. Millero of Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science and Gabriel Rosón of Universidad de Vigo (University of Vigo) as part of the WOCE_A05 data set.

The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) was a major component of the World Climate Research Program with the overall goal of better understanding the ocean's role in climate and climatic changes resulting from both natural and anthropogenic causes. The CO2 survey took advantage of the sampling opportunities provided by the WOCE Hydrographic Program (WHP) cruises during this period between 1990 and 1998. The final collection covers approximately 23,000 stations from 94 WOCE cruises.

  • Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon; Abbreviation: DIC; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Calculated; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: The total alkalinity (TALK), total carbon dioxide (TCO2), and pH were determined from titrations of seawater collected at 33 stations. The titration systems were calibrated with Dickson standard seawater before and during the cruise. The pH was determined from the initial emf reading relative to TRIS buffers. The results for Dickson samples agree with laboratory spectroscopic measurements to ±0.005.; CRM batch number: Batch #12 ALKALI: 2227.0 ± 1.8 TCARBN: 2002.0 ± 5 PH: 7.93 ± 0.01.
  • Parameter or Variable: Total alkalinity; Abbreviation: TA; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Curve fitting method: Three titration systems (Thurmond and Millero 1982) were used to determine the TALK. Each system consisted of a Metrohm 655 Dosimat titrator and an Orion 720A pH meter that was operated by a personal computer (PC) (Millero et al. 1993a).; Uncertainty: Based upon the CRM calibrations at sea, the accuracy of the measured parameters is estimated to be ±7 µmol/kg for TALK; Method reference: Thurmond, V.
