Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon; Abbreviation: DIC; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Calculated; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: Two different methods have been used to determine the dissolved inorganic carbon content of seawater samples at IOS: gas chromatography and coulometry. There is little information regarding the analyses prior to 1992, especially those samples from the early NOGAP cruises 1986-71, 1987-70 and 1987-71. Samples from these cruises where analyzed by gas chromatography. On later cruises DIC analyses were conducted coulometrically. Samples analyzed after late 1989 were analyzed with SOMMA (Single-Operator Multi-Metabolic Analyzer) systems (Johnson et al., 1993)..
  • Parameter or Variable: Total alkalinity; Abbreviation: TA; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Type of titration: potentiometric titration; Cell type (open or closed): open, closed; Curve fitting method: Samples for total alkalinity were determined by software-controlled potentiometric titrations using combination pH electrodes and dilute hydrochloric acid dispensed by automated burettes. Total alkalinity was determined following the closed-cell method described by Millero et al. (1993) until 1999 and using open-cell titrations after that date.; Method reference: Millero, F.J., Zhang, J.-Z., Lee, K., and Campbell, D.M.: Titration alkalinity of seawater, Mar. Chem., 44, 153-165, 1993..
  • Parameter or Variable: pH; Abbreviation: pH; pH scale: Total Scale; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Temperature of pH measurement: 25C; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: Spectrophotometrical. The only direct pH measurements included in this data set were from the CASES cruise in 2003-2004. Mucci et al. (2010)..
