This dataset includes discrete and profile observation data collected from NOAA Ship Ronald H. Brown in the Pacific Ocean from 2015-04-10 to 2015-06-27. These data include water temperature, salinity, nutrients, chlorofluorocarbons (CFC-11, CFC-12), sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total alkalinity, pH on total scale, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), tritium, helium, delta C14, and delta C13. The International GO-SHIP Program carries out a systematic and global re-occupation of select WOCE/JGOFS hydrographic sections to quantify changes in storage and transport of heat, fresh water, carbon dioxide (CO2), and related parameters.

  • Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon; Abbreviation: DIC; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Calculated; Replicate information: 568 replicate sample analysis made. Average difference from the mean was 0.70. No systematic differences between the replicates were observed. DICE 1: 0.64 DICE 2: 0.75; Standardization description: The stability of each coulometer cell solution was confirmed three different ways. 1) Gas loops were run at the beginning and end of each cell; 2) CRM’s supplied by Dr. A. Dickson of SIO, were measured near the beginning; and 3) Duplicate samples were typically run throughout the life of the cell solution. Each coulometer was calibrated by injecting aliquots of pure CO2 (99.999%) by means of an 8-port valve (Wilke et al., 1993) outfitted with two calibrated sample loops of different sizes (~1ml and ~2ml). The instruments were each separately calibrated at the beginning of each cell with a minimum of two sets of these gas loop injections and then again at the end of each cell to ensure no drift during the life of the cell. These standard loops were consistent throughout the cruise.; CRM batch number: 143: Certified Value = 2017.75 µmol/kg.
  • Parameter or Variable: Total alkalinity; Abbreviation: TA; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Type of titration: two-stage open cell acidimetric, potentiometric; Cell type (open or closed): jacketed glass beaker, temperature-controlled; Curve fitting method: Non-linear least squares based on data from pH range 3.5 to 3.0; TA blank correction: N/A; Uncertainty: Reproducibility of B143 analyses: Leg 1 - 1.14 µmol/kg; Leg 2 - 1.10 µmol/kg Repeatability (based on duplicate analyses): Leg 1 - 0.78 µmol/kg; Leg 2 - 0.92 µmol/kg Estimated uncertainty (~68% confidence): 1.8 µmol/kg (includes estimate of CRM uncertainty (1 µmol/kg); mean deviation from CRM certified value (<1 mol/kg); and analysis precision (see above).; Method reference: Dickson, Andrew G., Chris Sabine and James R. Christian, editors, "Guide to Best Practices for Ocean CO2 Measurements", Pices Special Publication 3, IOCCP Report No. 8, October 2007, SOP 3b, "Determination of total alkalinity in sea water using an open-cell titration".
  • Parameter or Variable: pH; Abbreviation: pH; pH scale: total hydrogen ion concentration scale (mol/kg-sw); Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Temperature of pH measurement: 25 °C; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: spectrophotometric determination using purified meta-cresol purple indicator dye; Uncertainty: Reproducibility of B143 analyses: Leg 1 - 0.0012; Leg 2 - 0.0018 (difference reflects inexperience of analyst on Leg 2) Repeatability (based on duplicate analyses): ~0.0005 Estimated uncertainty (~68% confidence): in range 0.006 < Uc < 0.01; the reason for this is that there is no good information about the uncertainty of the Liu et al. calibration (though I do know reasons that cause it to be larger than one might wish, due to the problem of assigning a good "pH" to the Tris buffer used in their calibration approach..
