Eastward and northward components of ocean current and water temperature collected from moorings in North East Pacific Coast from 1973-01-05 to 1974-02-23 (NCEI Accession 0163985)

The University of Washington maintained moorings off the coast of Washington as part of the Continental Shelf Experiment 1973-74. Moorings were kept out for longer time periods during the winter and summer and an attempt was made to maintain moorings at both an Inshore and an Offshore site. Speed and direction were measured and rotated to true North, then resolved into u and v components. Most of the current meters were Aanderaa meters but Braincon meters were used on the Westport mooring (WP). The Aanderaa meters had temperature sensors. Data was sampled in 10 or 20 minute intervals and edited for spurious values. A more complete description of the data can be found in: Smith, Hickey, Beck, 1976, Observations from moored current meters on the Washington Continental Shelf from February 1971 to February 1974, University of Washington, Department of Oceanography, Special Report 65. Data file format is plain text.

Purpose The Continental Shelf Experiment was originally sponsored by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission under contract designator AT 45-1-2225-TA-25 to Dr. J. Dugan Smith, Principal Investigator, at the University of Washington. The purpose of the 1973–1974 project was to study the winter and spring currents on the Washington continental shelf. In 1973 the University of Washington maintained 2 current meter moorings, Inshore, (IN), and Offshore (OF) during January and February 1973. A new mooring site was selected off Westport, WA (WP) in February 1973 to provide a cross shelf comparison. It was only occupied from February through March 1973. The IN mooring was also deployed March–June 1973 and again November 1973–February 1974. The OF mooring was deployed in March 1973 but was lost and subsequently not redeployed.

Processing Steps
  • Data Type: u and v components of velocity (calculated); Units: cm/sec; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Braincon type 381 current meters (BR), Aanderaa RCM-4 current meters (AA); Sampling and Analyzing Method: BR and AA current meters measured current directions and magnitudes. Directions were rotated to true north and u (eastward), v (northward) components of velocity were computed. Data was sampled in 10 minute intervals, then edited for spurious values. A more complete description of the data can be found in: Smith, Hickey, Beck, 1976, Observations from moored current meters on the Washington Continental Shelf from February 1971 to February 1974, University of Washington, Department of Oceanography, Special Report 65.; Data Quality Information: Data were plotted and visually inspected for spurious values.
  • Data Type: TEMPERATURE [WATER TEMPERATURE] (measured); Units: degrees C; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Aanderaa RCM-4 (AA); Sampling and Analyzing Method: AA current meters measured Temperature. Data was sampled in 10 minute intervals, then edited for spurious values.
