As part of The Pacific Northwest Coastal Ecosystem Regional Study (PNCERS) the University of Washington under the direction of Dr. Barbara Hickey maintained two offshore moorings, one off Grays Harbor, WA, and one off Coos Bay, OR, from early 1998 through Spring 2000. These moorings included an upward looking Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) providing a time series of temperature at the heads and u,v components of velocity profiles. On the Grays Harbor offshore mooring an Aanderaa Instruments current meter (AA) below the ADCP measured speed, direction and conductivity. A mooring was also maintained in the Coos Bay estuary. Instruments in the estuary included an upward looking narrow band 1200 kHz ADCP providing a time series of temperature at the heads and u,v components of velocity profiles and either an AA or a Sea-Bird Electronics 37 MicroCat recorder to measure temperature and conductivity.

Approximately five and a half months of data from an earlier deployment at the Grays Harbor offshore mooring site were also included. These data consisted of 2 AAs measuring speed, direction, temperature and conductivity at approximately 25 and 30 meters.

Purpose The purpose of the Hickey component of this project was to investigate the physical variability in 3 Pacific Northwest estuaries and their relation to the coastal ocean. In order to do this instruments were deployed in three estuaries, Grays Harbor and Willapa Bay, Washington and Coos Bay, Oregon. Two offshore moorings were maintained off Grays Harbor, Washington and Coos Bay, Oregon. Two sites were sampled in the Coos Bay Estuary, CBEST1, at T-Dock and CBEST2 at the Charleston River. Only one site was sampled in the Grays Harbor Estuary, GHEST1. In Willapa Bay there were 4 sites sampled, a piling at Toke Point, a piling at Nahcotta, WB3, and WB6. In addition, several water property (CTD) surveys were taken both in the estuaries and offshore.

ADCPs measure water velocity at several depths, referred to as bins. Distance between bins was set to 1 meter in the estuary, 2 meters on the Coos Bay offshore mooring and 1 meter on the Grays Harbor offshore mooring, except the last year which was changed to 2 meters. The sample interval was set to 60 minutes, except the last 2 deployments in the estuary which were set to 30 minutes. All data was rotated to true North. Please see the Readme files for more details on the sampling set up. Data was plotted and edited for spurious values.; Data Quality Information: Data was plotted and visually inspected for spikes or spurious values. All extraneous bins may not have not been removed from the data. In particular, spikes related to side lobe reflections off the surface and subsurface instruments or mooring components may still be present.
