Dataset Overview | National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI)

Water temperature, oxygen, and salinity collected from NOAA Ship Nancy Foster, Savannah, and NOAA Ship Pisces in North Atlantic Ocean and coastal waters of the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida in support of the Southeast Fisheries Fisheries Independent Survey (SEFIS) program from 2010-07-28 to 2022-09-27 (NCEI Accession 0172443)

This dataset contains one comma separated value file of temperature, salinity and depth data along with additional variables including fluorometry, transmissivity, and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) from CTD casts collected in support of the National Marine Fisheries Southeast Fisheries Independent Survey (SEFIS) project from 2010-07-28 to 2022-09-27. The CTD casts were taken at chevron traps deployments off the coasts of the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida in conjunction with other efforts by the SEFIS program to help to assess patterns in reef fish distribution and abundance off the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida coasts.

SEFIS is a fishery-independent survey that collects data on reef fish in southeast US waters using multiple gears, including chevron traps, video cameras, ROVs, longlines, and acoustics. This project is also collecting information on hardbottom habitats using video cameras, ROVs, and acoustics gears.

In this accession, NCEI has archived multiple versions of these data. The latest (and best) version of these data has the largest version number.
Purpose To (1) increase the spatial footprint and sample sizes of fishery-independent sampling in southeast US waters (2) add video cameras as a survey gear to address trap selectivity issues and to develop annual indices off abundance for species that avoid traps (3) map hardbottom habitats using multibeam sonar to improve survey design (4) use remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) to visually assess broad- and fine-scale habitat and red snapper densities and sizes in continental shelf-break waters (5) perform research to inform survey methods and to address critical management issues, including an ongoing assessment of fisheries (split-beam) sonar as a fishery-independent survey tool, and longline surveys to assess patterns in red snapper distribution and abundance.
