Raw data from the benthic macroinvertebrate surveys conducted in Saginaw Bay in 2006-2009, and in Lake Huron, including Georgian Bay and North Channel, in 2007 and 2012. These basic benthic survey data provide number of each taxon in each replicate sample (abundance), density, and biomass.

Purpose The objective of these benthic surveys was to update the status of the benthic community and thereby extend temporal assessments of previously-defined trends in Lake Huron. Previous surveys were conducted in Saginaw Bay in 1991-1996, in Lake Huron in 2000 and 2003, and in Georgian Bay and North Channel in 2002. Based on these previous surveys, benthic macroinvertebrate communities in both Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron had undergone major changes since the late 1960s and early 1970s.

  • Parameter or Variable: BENTHIC SPECIES - TAXA ABUNDANCE (measured); Units: no. / grab; Observation Category: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: sediment sampler - grab; Sampling and Analyzing Method: In the laboratory, material collected by the Ponar grab and retained in the 0.5-mm sleeve was placed into a white enamel pan or a large petri dish, and organisms were removed and counted under a 1.5x magnifier lamp, or under low-power of a binocular microscope. Organisms were sorted, counted, and placed into separate vials by major taxonomic groups. For more detailed information see Nalepa, T. F., D. L. Fanslow, M. B. Lansing, G. A. Lang, M. Ford, G.
