Crossover difference data records (XDR) from GEOSAT Geodetic Mission (GM) and Exact Repeat Mission (ERM) data from 1985-03-31 to 1987-11-07 (NCEI Accession 9000199)
Crossover difference data records (XDRs) from the GEOSAT Geodetic Mission (GM) and Exact Repeat Mission (ERM) for the time period of March 31, 1985 to November 7, 1987. Parameters include: time, orbit, latitude/longitude, and sea surface height. Corrections to the data include: sea level, wind and wave data, tides, dry and wet troposphere, ionosphere, height bias, altimeter crossover differences, altimeter sea surface measurement, and spacecraft orientation. These data were submitted by the U.S. Navy via National Ocean Service.
The US Navy Geosat (Geodetic Satellite) radar altimeter mission lasted for nearly 5 years (March 1985 to January 1990) and collected approximately 750 million measurements of sea level, wave height, and wind speed over the global oceans. During the Geodetic Mission (1986 to 1987), the satellite did not repeat its ground track for the duration of the mission. The orbit of the satellite was changed in early October 1986 to begin the Exact Repeat Mission (ERM) which lasted from November 1986 until the satellite quit functioning in January 1990. During the ERM, the satellite repeated its ground track every 17 days. Data were initially processed by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, MD in coordination with the NOAA/NOS Satellite Altimeter Group. Data products were transferred to the NOAA National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) for distribution. Data products are archived at the NODC.

| Supplemental Information | Note: Global crossover difference data derived from sea level observations collected during the first phase of operations of the U.S. Navy Geodetic Satellite (GEOSAT). The set of two tapes (NODC working tape #'s D03260, and D03261, NODC Reference Number L01017) contain crossover difference records (XDR's) from the Wilkes Antarctica region. The two tapes are part of a set of GEOSAT tapes submitted by Ms. Nancy Doyle of NOAA/NOS (Rockville, MD); additional GEOSAT data from other ocean regions is filed under NCEI accession number 9000068, NODC Reference #'s L00950-L00959. Data for each region are held on two magnetic tapes per region, with each set of two tapes filed under a single reference number (LXXXXX). The design of the database did not exactly reflect the FGDC Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM). Principal Investigator (PI) and organization contact information accurately represents all available information from the legacy database at the time that this description was created. However, proper attribution of a PI to a specific institution or the role (submitting or collecting) taken by an institution may not be correct due to inexact mapping between fields in the legacy database and the CSDGM. Due to this uncertainty, the contact information was initially recorded in the Supplemental Information element of the CSDGM description. To develop more accurate metadata, NCEI reviews metadata for all accessions on an ongoing basis.
